The laboratory of Dr. Maayan Levy is seeking a Life Science Technician 2 (LST-2) in the Department of Pathology at Stanford University.

About the Lab:

The intestinal host-environment interface comprises one of the most complex ecosystems on Earth. Dietary nutrients as well as bacterial, viral, and eukaryotic microbiomes influences many aspects of host physiology, but at the same time needs to be tightly regulated by the intestinal epithelium. We are particularly interested in understanding the consequences of this interface on disease risk in the context of cancer, chronic inflammatory diseases, metabolic diseases, and post-infection syndromes. In the Levy lab, we study this interplay using three complementary fields of research.

In the Thaiss and Levy Labs, we investigate the core principles of bidirectional communication between the body and the brain, with a particular focus on interactions between the immune, metabolic, and nervous systems in physiology and disease. We aim to decipher the mechanistic basis of how environmental and lifestyle factors, such as diet, exercise, sleep, stress, infections, xenobiotics, temperature, social interactions, and technology interact with the human body. We explore new elements of the biology of aging, and how they influence an individual's propensity for the development of multifactorial diseases, such as neurodegeneration, cancer, cardiovascular disease, and chronic inflammatory disease.

About the Position:

With minimal supervision, the LST will perform highly detailed procedures on animals and on gnotobiotic equipment in order to ensure sterility requirements. The LST will independently perform animal procedures inside germfree/gnotobiotic isolators and/or gnotobiotic cages. Procedures include gavaging, collection of feces, urine, and/or blood, tissue dissection and harvesting samples, tumor implantation and monitoring, etc. The LST will clean and sterilize isolators while strictly adhering to protocols without any deviations. Accurate and detailed record keeping are a vital part of this position. The ability to work collaboratively with researchers (PI, postdoctoral scholars, graduate students, and research staff) is essential. The LST will also be responsible for cleaning and maintenance of the facility as well as maintaining inventory of supplies for the facility, the isolators, and the procedures. The LST will also troubleshoot autoclave or other equipment failures. This is a full-time on-site position, Monday through Friday.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Preferred 2 years of experience with gnotobiotic animals and maintaining records related to animal husbandry and breeding.
  • Experience with the following procedures in mice: gavaging, collection of feces, urine, and/or blood, tissue dissection and harvesting samples, and tumor implantation.
  • Exceptional attention to detail.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with research personnel.
  • Possess computer skills and ability to set-up record keeping systems.

Education & Experience (Required):

  • Two years of laboratory experience or two years of college coursework in the scientific discipline or combination of equivalent education and relevant work experience.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (Required):

  • Work at the Life Science Technician 2 level requires experience and ability beyond that required for the Life Science Technician 1, including increased technical skills and problem-solving abilities.

Physical Requirements*:

  • Frequently stand, walk, twist, bend, stoop, squat, grasp lightly, use fine manipulation, grasp forcefully, perform desk-based computer tasks, use telephone, and write by hand.
  • Ability to stand and move on hard surfaces for up to eight hours.
  • Occasionally lift and handle materials up to 20 pounds.
  • Rarely carry/pull and/or push up to 20 pounds.
  • Must have correctible vision to perform the duties of the job.
  • The position may require repetitive motion.

Working Conditions:

  • Work occurs in a research laboratory environment. Depending on research, may work in the vicinity of animals, chemicals, gasses, or hazardous materials. Expected to follow all safety requirements and procedures, including wearing appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) if required.

The expected pay range for this position is $37.00 (Step 1) to $44.55 (Step 10) per hour. Placement in the pay range is subject to the applicable collective bargaining agreement.
