Clinical Data Manager

The Stanford Department of Pediatrics, Division of Rheumatology is seeking a skilled, detail-oriented, motivated, Clinical Data Manager to join the Immune Behavioral Health/ PANS Research Team. The Stanford Immune Behavioral Health (IBH) Clinical Research Program operates adjacent a pediatric multidisciplinary clinic established in 2012 to care for patients with infection-associated neuropsychiatric deteriorations and co-morbid inflammatory conditions (i.e. arthritis, vascular inflammation, etc) symptoms. Led by PI Dr. Jennifer Frankovich, the research program collects longitudinal clinical data and biospecimens to carry out research looking at the immune system, proteomics, microbiome, metabolomics, and genomics at Stanford and with collaborators/ basic scientists globally with the ultimate goal of better understanding the underpinnings of illness and improving diagnosis, care, and treatment for affected individuals.

The ideal candidate will be an enthusiastic, bright, and organized teamplayer. Successful candidates will perform complex technical work associated with data collection, database management, data cleaning, and data integrity. This candidate will discover areas that would benefit from systematic/automatic processes to increase operational effectiveness and implement accurate and achievable solutions, ensure data collection accuracy, optimization, and integrity with the utilization/implementation of smart tools, dashboards, and workflows. They will create queries and devise plans to backfill missing data and conduct ongoing audits to ensure data reliability. The ideal incumbent will understand the big picture of our clinical research program, implement tools to achieve program goals, and fully appreciate the downsteam effects of change. They will be a capable problem solver, confident decision maker, diligent change manager, and possess precise documentation skills. This individual will work closely with the P.I., other investigators, research managers and coordinators, students, clinicans, clinical scribes, and trainees to organize and execute clinical data plan.

This is a fixed term position for two (2) years at 100% FTE. Opportunity for renewal based on funding availability.

Duties to include:

·Lead data collection processes/instrument design, implementation, ongoing audit

·Lead the implementation of data standards across lifecycle and common data elements for data collection- maintain detailed records; regularly report to PI and other team members.

·Maintain existing databases and develop guidelines to ensure data integrity.

·Establish complex record-keeping methods for research studies, including cross-indexing by several factors as well as designing and revising forms needed for tracking and data analysis (e.g. REDCap or other research record system)- design and customize reports

·Work under consultative or self-initiated direction to assess and produce relevant, standard, or custom information (reports, charts, graphs and tables) from structured data sources by querying data repositories and generating the associated information. Distribute and disseminate reports to applicable agencies, researchers/collaborators, management, and other internal end-users.

·Devise methods for identifying data patterns, trends in available information sources using a variety of qualitative and quantitative techniques.Determine and recommend additional data collection and reporting requirements. Implement recommendations.

·Identify and eliminate redundenies and resolve data descripencies.

·Create non-routine databases and their related information summary; develop algorithms and statistical models; and perform statistical analyses/interpretation appropriate to complex data and reporting requirements (e.g. SPSS, SAS, R, etc.) to identify tends, risk factors, outcomes, etc.

·Collaborate with technical staff to standardize and systemize routine reports, dashboards, and metrics.

·Work with stakeholders (clinicians and research staff) to obtain feedback and implement changes to surveys, processes, and tools

·Develop new methods and tools to assist with data collection and analysis corresponding to different research projects

·Work with data providers and/or investigators to discuss and clarify data ambiguities, inconsistencies, variables, etc., correcting current data as needed and providing action plans for long-term solutions of data collection and analysis

·Mentor and supervise junior staff, interns, scribes, students and/or other research teammembers on data-related projects, methods and issues

Incumbent should expect to be on-site in Palo Alto, CA with occasional days at clinic in Menlo Park, CA

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

·Advanced degree (Masters or higher) in data science, biostatistics, statistics, epidemiology, computer science, mathematics, and/or medical/health related field

·Extensive experience working with large relational databases and strong skills in statistical analyses (multivariate regressions, cox regressions, Kaplan-Meier survival analyses, etc).

·Clinical knowledge and/or experience working in a medical or research setting

·Experience overseeing lifecycle of data from project conception, data strategy and design, auditing collection, data analyses with statistical methods, interpreting results and assisting with the publication of findings.

·Strong computer skills, experience with databases and analytic languages, and ability to quickly learn and master various computer programs, Highly proficient in SQL, R, and/or SAS with experience manipulating large, complex datasets.

·Experience and/or willingness to mentor and manage junior staff, student researchers, and guide student/interns on projects/methods/manuscripts

·Previous successful experience in project management and implementation

  • Comprehensive understanding of scientific principles, especially regarding epidemiological studies, clinical research, clinical trials, and longitudinal data sets.

·Excellent organizational and communication skills

·Demonstrated ability to complete detailed work accurately and on deadline

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE (REQUIRED):

Bachelor's degree and three years of relevant experience or combination of education and relevant experience. Experience in clinical or medical research field.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES (REQUIRED):

·In-depth knowledge and experience using and applying analytical software, database management system software, database reporting software, database user interface and query software, and data mining software.

·Expert ability to collect data using a variety of methods, such as data mining and hardcopy or electronic documentation study, to improve or expand databases.

·Substaintial experience with MS Office and analytics programs noted above (SQL, Stata, R, SAS,Python, Redcap)

·Strong statistical ability.

·Ability to mentor and direct the work of others

·Strong listening, verbal and written communication skills.

·Must be intellectually curious, have strong problem-solving skills, critical thinking skills, and attention to detail.

·Ability to priotize workload, adjust timelines, work under deadlines, and shift priorities based on program and scientific collaborators (with general guidance) is essential.

·Ability to use logic to calculate data; efficiently construct a database or scrutinize the form of a question.

·Ability to work with data of varying levels of quality and validity.

·Demonstrated ability to produce data in a clear and understandable manner meeting user requirements.

·Ability to work effectively with multiple internal and external stakeholders and knowledgeholders

·Ability to take a leadership role on projects and direct junior staff to effectively complete tasks

·Extensive computer work- ability to remain at desk/on computer during perform desk-based computer tasks for lengthily periods of time (keyboarding, dexterity)

WORKING CONDITIONS:

·May work extended hours during peak business cycles.

·Work will be conducted in an administrative office setting and in a pediatric clinic

·May work extended hours, evenings or weekends.

·May travel locally. Occasional overnight travel.

Stanford University provides pay ranges representing its good faith estimate of what the University reasonably expects to pay for a position. The pay offered to a selected candidate will be determined based on factors such as (but not limited to) the scope and responsibilities of the position, the qualifications of the selected candidate, departmental budget availability, internal equity, geographic location and external market pay for comparable jobs. The pay range for this position working in the California Bay area is between $104,358 to $128,038 based on commensurate experience and background.
